On Love

Love hurts, especially when you are doing it right

Choosing to seek out love is an act of bravery. It takes courage to put yourself and your heart out there. It’s also true that it can hurt…a lot.

As well as the joy and comfort you may be looking for you can also experience disappointment, loss, and discomfort…and you may be the cause of similar pain to others.  This is unavoidable.  The only pain that you can reasonably expect to avoid is the gratuitous kind which comes from being thoughtless or selfish.

As you are dating, please remember to be proud of yourself for accepting this risk. Also remember that the person you are connecting with is also likely to be just as vulnerable to pain as you are.  If you don’t want a second date you can be honest and kind in the way you make that clear.  If you are in a relationship and you come to realize that it is not right for you, you can end it with warmth and respect.  This takes extra effort and  a bit of courage, but it’s worth it.
